Its as official as we know, this is our latest harvest ever! P & MA can't remember a harvest that started in August let alone August 5th! We have had a slow start and are hoping this week will bring us better luck! We just know that the first week of harvest took care of all our breakdowns (including 2 that resulted in searching for parted out 1470s for parts that aren't even made anymore) and fires (just a couple small ones on trucks and some stubble due to excess straw in truck engines). I am happy to report that when I came to town this morning, both combines were running and all trucks were running. Here's to hoping we have a great day in the harvest field.
Aug 5th - Kdub riding on D & S's horse swing waiting for harvest to get started! The kids came up from bed dressed and ready to go for harvest... too bad they didn't get started cutting until about 1.JP checking to make sure no combines have moved
Shortly after noon my sister drove by so Kdub and I went home to swim and JP stayed with the harvesters. I don't think I could have dragged him away. There was no way he was going to miss out on the first day of harvest!
JP's 2nd ride on the first day of harvest. He rode for about 2 hours, came home for a swim and then wanted to go again with the snack cooler.
Kdub ready for her first ride of the year.
Kdub got to ride with dad this time.
JP decided he would ride with D.
After a couple days at D's the moved behind the shop.
Our crew hard at work!
That's not a good sign, Dads never home before dark during harvest.
This is what they think of breakdowns!
Kdub taking her first solo ride with dad. P reminded me that this is JP's 3rd harvest riding alone with dad, so I let her go by herself.
She must have been so happy to be free of me because I don't think she stopped talking to dad for one second that she was in the cab!
We spent some time yesterday helping dad fix his combine. He was so thankful when a neighbor called and had found the part he needed off one of the parts combines. FEW!!!
There is something about this picture that reminds me of little house on the prairie.
My job was to hold the bottom of the pipe while P screwed in the top.
The picture doesn't do the hill justice that we were on. He called me a city girl when I asked for an alternate way off the hill than the way he drove us out there. I only think it is fair when the combine comes with a leveler and the pickup doesn't. Luckily for me he cut a new road on the hill top. I am guessing he will be blaming me for the crummy pattern they have to work with today due to the cut right in the middle of their circle around the hill.
I forgot to do this last year so I decided I better take at least one this year. I am glad I have it because there is no way JP will fit in there next year. He already had to scrunch down. He was very happy when I told him he could stand.
I know harvest hasn't gone as smooth as we would like but I look back and these pictures and wonder if life can get any better!
